A Little Bit About Container Gardening

With more and more of us, whether by choice or necessity living in apartments or condos rather than single family homes, a lot of people think that gardening is a hobby which is no longer open to them. This is fortunately not the case. Many people who do not have any outdoor space to speak of are choosing to get into container gardening. There are five things which you need to keep in mind to be successful at container gardening: the containers themselves, the growing mixture, sunlight, fertilizer and watering. The container itself is an important consideration. The containers should match or provide a decorative element to the place where you will put them but still be suitable for the plants you will be growing in them.
Redwood and cedar are good choices here; they are resistant to rot and do not need to be stained. If you plan to use wood containers, make sure that the wood is untreated; you don't want any chemicals poisoning your plants, after all. Plastic pots are inexpensive, but will quickly break down under sunlight and don't last. Terra cotta pots are attractive but are very prone to develop cracks or break outright. Glazed ceramic containers are a solid choice. They are durable; just make sure that they have adequate drainage.
Since your plants will have a limited space here, you need to make sure that your growing mixture will provide good drainage for them. The material should hold moisture well, but no so well that excess water will not drain and drown your plants. Look into what works well for your plants and check if any sand or other elements should be mixed into the growing material. The right mix of growing material is essential to successful container gardening.
Sunlight requirements depend on the plants you will be growing on your container garden. You can look into what they need – especially if you are growing flowers, do your research. Vegetable container gardens need about five hours of sunlight each day.
Fertilizer is very important to container gardening. You plants only have a little bit of soil to work with and it is not naturally replenished as it would be outdoors.
You will need to fertilize every other time that you water your container garden. You can use liquid seaweed – this is a good all purpose fertilizer. Again, look into what your particular plants will require in order to make sure that they are getting the necessary nutrients.
As with any gardening, watering is very important and container gardening is certainly no exception. You may need to figure out the water needs of your individual plants by trial and error; every plant has different requirements. In hot weather, you might need to water as often as every day.
Container gardening is a great hobby which lets even apartment dwellers get in on the relaxation and rewards of gardening. Determine what you want to grow and get the needed materials together – eventually, you will reap what you have sown.
