Deer fences are a necessity to many gardeners and farmers. Surprisingly you do not have to be adjacent to a heavily wooded area to have these animals nibbling at your garden. In fact they can become quite a pest to many people trying to grow produce and even flowers and shrubs. Because of this there are a number of different deer fences available.

It is wise to note that these animals are in fact quite hard to keep out. Their diet is varied so you can not count on them not eating your favorite shrubs etc just because you put feeders with their favorite foods in strategic places in the garden.

There are certain requirements for deer fences to be effective. They should be 6-8 ft high. This prevents the animals from jumping over. You can also put your feeders outside the fence so that the animals can take the easy food and not feel the need to make an effort to think of ways to bypass your deer fences.

They should also be made of sturdy material. Chain link is good but be sure there are no sharp points on the top. This can cause injury to the animals if they attempt to leap the fence. Injured animals can attract predators and cause more problems for you, plus you do not want to be responsible for hurting animals.

Deer fences should be positioned correctly. Make sure the plants and shrubs are at least 2 feet away from the barrier so that these clever animals do not find a way to nibble at your garden through it. This will ald feasting on your garden.
You can get metal posts with spikes on the bottom that you can simply hammer into the ground. These will make a reasonably strong support for your deer fence. You can also make holes with a tool and put the stakes in. Then cement them for really strong and permanent support stakes.

A double barrier is effective against these animals. This is because they do not like being confined in small spaces. Two barriers set parallel to each other about 3 feet apart make a good deer fence. Solid wood slatted barriers are also effective. This is because these animals do not like jumping into an unknown area. If they cannot see through the barrier they will be less inclined to jump over it. This will in turn save your garden from being eaten. Be sure to maintain your deer fence to make sure that you do not have any problems from broken places.
