Computers have moved a great deal from the earlier versions in white and grey or black. Now the colorful versions with features to play video or audio files of your choice are available. There are various formats that are available in the market. One of them is the Windows Media Video that is more commonly known as WMV.
This is a very popular and easy to play format. Most of the audio players have the option to play this format. WMV was initially developed by the Microsoft Corporation and its major purpose was to use for online streaming in internet explorer. It also had the capability to pick and play the files stored on the hard disk.

The latest version that is available in the market is WMP 9 (Windows Media Player 9). This is easily available on the Microsoft website and can be downloaded and installed. WMV format will require a codec for audio and video to be installed and this codec is very easily available. On the Microsoft Windows Media Player website you will get the download options for windows, Linux and Macintosh operating systems each. Downloaded the required version and then install as per the prompts. As for these systems the WMP 9 comes with all the codec’s so you would not require distinct codec’s to be installed. If your system has already got the Windows Media Player then it would be better if you can check whether you have got the latest version or not.

For getting the quality output of the sound make sure that you have got the enough memory, a good quality video and audio card along with a processor having decent configuration. On the Windows Media Player website you will find the system requirements for playing the WMV formats. If you have bought computer in or after 2001 then in all probability it will play the WMV files smoothly.
