How To Have A Stress-Free Moving Day
Author: mrskittens | Posted: 10.09.2008 | Views: 51Planning for your move should start several weeks in advance because there’s simply so much to do. All of your services have to be set up in your new home and cancelled in your existing one, from your internet connection and tv licence to your water, gas and electricity bills. Getting through the huge system of call centres that makes up what passes for customer service can be very time-consuming and you’ll find yourself having to call back day after day to get things done. Make a list of everything you need to change and tick them off as you do them – that way you won’t miss anything out. It’s also useful to change your address on internet services you use occasionally such as Amazon, eBay and the like – that way next time you use them at your new home you won’t run into any problems.
You should start packing for your move as far ahead as possible, but you’ll need to have a clear out first. This means taking a slow walk through your entire house and making a list of everything to keep and everything to throw away. Label things if you like, or make a big pile in one room of everything that’s not going with you when you move. You should be ruthless with your possessions – discard anything you haven’t used in the last year because chances are you never will! Once you’ve got everything sorted you can go about getting rid of it. Make one pile to take to the tip, one to give away to charity shops and one to sell. You should have got rid of all this things well before moving day.
As for the things you are taking with you, label them all with their locations in the new house. For items of furniture this will let the removal men know where to put them and also make it clear to you if there’s anything that won’t fit.
When it comes to your smaller possessions you’ll need to get boxes, either from your movers or from the supermarket. Many movers offer packing as a service but if you’re doing it yourself be sure to have plenty of tape, labels and packing materials handy. Label all your boxes if they’re fragile or need to be kept a certain way up to help the packers organise them during the move. Things you’ll need straight away in your new house (like the kettle!) you should label ‘load this last’ so that it’s the first thing out of the van.
After clearing out your house and packing everything away you should find you have less than you thought! This means that you can have a completely fresh start in your new home without any old junk lying around – your house will be easier to clean, look a lot neater and you can accumulate new things as you start your new life.
