St Lucia is famous for its wonderful array of exotic scenery, plants and animals - making the Caribbean island the perfect cruise destination for lovers of all things nature-related.

There are numerous botanical gardens to be found on St Lucia, including the Diamond Botanical Gardens in Soufriere, which boasts mineral baths and a spectacular waterfall.

Elsewhere, Mamiku Gardens incorporates the remains of a sugar estate from the 18th century in addition to a plethora of gorgeous greenery.

If you're more interested in how St Lucia's natural scenery relates to its history, you may want to explore its many plantations.

The Fond d'Or Nature Historic Park offers the opportunity to see leatherback turtles and take in the impressive Latille Waterfall, which is 20 feet high.

Foodies might want to add the Fond Doux Estate to their itinerary, as it offers a plantation tour that ends with the chance to sample local coconut water, fruit juices and rum punch along with a genuine Creole meal.

These paths offer the perfect opportunity to see the Amazona Versicolor - or the Jacquot, as it is affectionately dubbed by locals - which is the national bird of St Lucia, along with many other rare birds and plants.

In terms of specific trails, those looking for the least strenuous route may want to take the Barre De L'Isle Trail, which allows hikers to drink in some wonderful panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, Mount Gimie and the Cul-de-Sac Valley.

The Enbas Saut trail is suited to more experienced walkers wishing to catch a glimpse of the Troumassee River's waterfalls and pools, while the Des Cartiers Rainforest path and the Edmund Forest Reserve route are for hardened hikers interested in St Lucia's flora and fauna.

With St Lucia also playing host to a wide range of events year-round and offering activities such as water sports, fishing and golf, there is plenty to enjoy on this beautiful Caribbean island.
