Keeping Drivers Focused on the Road

One of the biggest problems on the road today is driver distraction. That distraction comes in a variety of forms, whether it’s answering a cell phone, reaching for a cup of coffee, or even drowsing off to sleep. The results of such actions, even for a second or two, can be lethal. Research supports these assumptions, as driver inattention is the primary cause of accidents today.
Fortunately, high-tech devices have been created to protect drivers against human error and improve overall fleet safety. One of the most significant high-tech devices on the market today that addresses fleet safety is the intelligent Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system.

How does it work?

The Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system utilizes a camera that detects deviation from the lane (when the turn signal is not used), which then relays that information to an electronic based system that notifies the driver of any drifting or weaving. That notification is in the form of a rumble sound, similar to that heard when a driver crosses a highway shoulder. The LDW system also issues a visual alert to the driver, which acts a second line of fleet safety defense against unintentional lane departure.

The LDW system is activated with speeds of 40 mph and higher and then stays active while the driver maintains a speed of at least 27.3 mph. The system is configured that way because the majority of accidents occur at the higher speed levels, where fleet safety can be compromised due to drivers having less time to react to unintentional lane changes.

Case in point

Suppose that you need to arrive at your next business appointment within one-hour. You’ve prepared for your meeting except that you forgot to take some crucial stats with you for your presentation. You reach for your cell phone and start dialing the office. While you’re dialing, you unintentionally begin to drift into the next lane. Suddenly, you hear a loud rumbling sound and notice a visual alert from you’re newly installed LDW system. Thanks to the fleet safety LDW system, you quickly move back to your lane before anything bad happens. This smart lane safety device has just prevented a possible accident from occurring.

Installing LDW systems into company cars can be a real lifesaver and an integral part of a successful fleet safety program.
