Thousands of wine enthusiasts all over the world are always in the pursuit of good wine and are eager to know which wines to purchase and which ones to pass. This is mainly because fine wines that are released in the market are highly sought after and thus require a large investment at a short notice while the buyer can’t even taste the wine before the purchase. Wine collectors also need to make themselves aware of the development of wines that have already been released. By doing so, one will always know what he or she can expect from a particular fine wine when it comes to its quality, typicality and value.

Fine wines are not the regular bottles of wine that you would down during a meal or on a routine day. These are the bottles that you could occasionally withdraw from your cellar and treat all your senses by tasting them in small quantities. The process of wine tasting is an examination and evaluation of wine based on the response it induces on your various senses. The chemicals which are responsible for in the wine are identical to the ones found in fruits and vegetables while the sweetness in the wine is due to the residual sugar present in the wine relative to the acid content after the fermentation process is completed. Wines with a small amount of residual sugar are known as dry wines. The ripeness of the fruit is quite often mistaken as residual sugar, while actually the wine would be quite dry.

Each variety of grapes used to produce fine wines will have a peculiar taste and smell. Complex mixtures of organic molecules like terpenes and esters provide individual flavors to wine. Experienced wine tasters will be able to distinguish the different tastes resulting from different varieties of wines and the ones due to certain intentional or unintentional factors during the wine production. Some of the intentional factors that influence the taste would be due to addition of oak, which can give flavors such as chocolate, coffee and vanilla.

Highly exclusive and superior fine wines can sell over thousands of dollars, though fine wines is term used any bottle that sells over a retail price of $30. Wine prices are like any Veblen commodity whose price increases as the demand for the particular variety increases. Thus, collection of fine wines is considered more of an investment besides being a hobby for many people.
