In the US, pro bono criminal lawyers, pro bono divorce or family lawyers are those provided by the courts if you cannot afford one. Unfortunately, what normally happens is you are either given a pro bono lawyer who is just interested in doing his job, or a passionate mind, eager to help the underdog.

Finding a pro bono family lawyer can be a traumatic experience. Here you are, on the verge of seeing your marriage, family life or career collapse under your very eyes, and you have to find someone willing to be your lawyer for free.

If you plan to look for free law help or a pro bono lawyer in the Internet, make sure he is legally able to defend you in your state. You might be wasting your time if you sign up with a website that does not direct you to a pro bono lawyer in your area.

Furthermore, since you are at the height of your emotional roller coaster, just make an effort to understand exactly what the pro bono lawyer you found is willing to give you for free. In most cases, the service is free, but you will be charged incidentals like photocopying, transportation, or notary fee expenses.

The first step in solving your legal woes is to find someone with a legal mind to help you. Take it one step at a time, and start with signing on a pro bono lawyer that you get along with. When you talk to possible pro bono lawyers, ask about their commitment, how much experience they have in similar cases, and how much time and willingness they have to work on your case. Many times, good pro bono lawyers are booked solid, which makes it difficult to get a commitment from them. However, at least you know that when they give their go signal, they are in it for the long haul.

If you have ever watched a movie that has lawyers in them, then you must have heard the term pro bono. This simply means free legal service. Technically it means for the public good, but to the regular guy on the street, it means free legal help.
