It’s one of the first things about a man that anyone can notice, so the type of coat someone wears can say a lot about them.

Men's coats are far from uniform: picking the right one is essential.

Double-Breasted Men's Coats

Think Napoleon and Wellington. This classic men's coat has its roots in the smart and sophisticated aesthetic of the military and in the modern day has become synonymous with distinguished and masculine males.

Perfect for the office, the double-breast keeps the jacket tight, making it cosy and warm whilst still looking sleek. Fitting nicely over suits, men's double-breasted coats have become a timeless classic for all occasions.

The Staple Mackintosh

As iconic as it is practical, the mac first came to British shops in 1824, gaining its name from its Scottish designer, Charles Macintosh. Remaining popular ever since, the mac is an incredibly practical and still decidedly stylish addition to the wardrobe: waterproof coats don't come better equipped or better looking.

Light as well as waterproof, macs have long been championed by businessmen who need to stay smart – and more importantly, dry – in rainy months. The ultimcation and style: the first trench coats were designed by Burberry and Aquascutum, and only soldiers of officer class status could wear them.

As a fashion item the trench coat developed a long association with detective fiction and war film portrayals. Today they retain that touch of elegance, and remain as useful and impressive as the original designs.

Men's Overcoats

Designed as a way of protecting other clothing, overcoats been popular for centuries. Usually extending below the knee, they have remained fashionable because their cover means that people can travel from place to place without ruining suits, shirts and trousers.

An instant association with sophistication, a lot would have to go wrong for a simple overcoat not to look stylish. It's a look that well never go away: perhaps the archetype of men's coats.
