A wireless LAN is a wireless network that connects at least two computers using the necessary technology that enables connection and communication between same or not devices within a particular and limited area. Practically, if you are at home or in the office and you want to move around using your laptop, you can connect to a wireless network and do whatever you want within the transmission area.

Wireless networking is exceptionally useful and versatile; it is considered to be the future of the internet and computer technology, facilitating our lives. Wi-Fi is a new term that entered our lives for good and seems to be predominant everywhere. There are several types of wireless networks available today; most of them need some kind of equipment to operate smoothly and broadcast within this particular area. Usually a network adapter, an access point and router are needed in order to be able to connect via a Wi-Fi connection.

What are the types of wireless networks? There are many and feature different characteristics. Some of them intend to connect small devices in short distances – such as Bluetooth. Some others use lower playing networks to encrypt information transmitted during the connection. There are stand alone networks, and other that operate via Private Networks, providing security and encryption through them.

A wireless network can feature fixed antennas; this means that they do not move often or at all, while some others can be mobile, allowing their antennas to move on a constant basis. The technology used for each one of them is completely different and they are used in different operations and with different specifications. Some of these networks can operate as licensed or private, while some others may feature unlicensed parts, especially when it comes to the spectrum of their frequency.
