Sometimes a phone call is just not enough - imagine you could see your loved one when speaking to them on the telephone. A familiar face can be a precious sight if you’re far from home and thanks to new and evolving technology this possibility becomes reality.

Video calls are taking on a new lease of life. No longer restricted to the workplace or your home computer, video calls can now be made from anywhere you have a webcam and internet connection. Some laptops have in-built webcams which makes the process even easier and people are now even using games consoles and mobile phones to make video calls.

The recent Olympic Games is an example of a situation where video calls could be used in a wide range of ways. With thousands of athletes from all over the world there would be plenty of demand for video call facilities and that‘s before even considering all the spectators, Olympic staff and the media.

Video calls were popular at the last set of Olympics with many athletes choosing this method of communication to stay in touch with far away family and friends. It’s great if competitors’ families, friends and partners could attend the games themselves to cheer on their Olympic champions but many people cannot afford to travel the long distances. Video calls are a great way to close the gap created by travelling across the globe; family and friends are a source of support for athletes and being able to see them during a video call adds a more personal element to words of motivation and encouragement.

Video calls were also used by spectators and are a great way to update those back home of the latest Olympic results, offering supporters a means of sharing the excitement with fellow fans who couldn’t be at the games. Almost as good as being there yourself!

The technology available to support video calls is second to none and lots of clever features make high quality video calls possible. Crystal clear sound and vision mean no vital information is lost. Some versions can even eliminate any sound not coming from directly in front of the webcam so anyone watching the Olympics could make a call right from the spectator stand. It doesn’t get more realistic than that.

A good quality lens will make sure nothing gets left out and if you make a lot of group calls it might be worth considering a webcam with a wide-angled lens so everyone fits in the frame when video calls are made. This is essential for Olympic teams who want to make calls together and stay in touch with their fans, wherever in the world they may be.

With the right ingredients you can bridge the miles between you, your family and friends, and share the experience of the Olympics with those who can’t be there with you.
