The Allure Of Coin Collecting

Coin collecting has been a much loved hobby for boys and girls and adults alike since coins came into circulation. While historically coin hording would have been undertaken for financial gain, collecting coins as artefacts developed only later. The world’s very first coin collector, by modern standards, is believed to be the Italian poet Petrarch who, in the fourteenth century, began collecting ancient coins.

Nowadays, from rare treasures such as ancient Greek and Roman coins to currency of the Middle Ages and modern production, coin collecting sparks a fascination among historians and coin fanatics the world over. While many of the world’s finest examples of coins can only be viewed in museums, for collectors, the value of a coin can be far simpler, with trading values rising significantly between competitive collectors.

Typically, a coin’s face value is based on a number of select criteria, specifically its condition, age, rarity, significance, whether there are any errors on it and its general quality of design. For most collectors, particularly emphatic ones, rather than gather coins at random, they will seek out coins from a certain year, country, or series. Some collectors will even only look for coins with defects in them.

You can have your coin collection valued by experts in coinage, who will judge the condition of your coins on a scale radiating from poor to uncirculated, in other words in mint condition and shhe specific collection themes you’re interested in.

Finding a trustworthy coin dealer from whom you can seek advice is also a good idea if you’re thinking of starting a coin collection. As an expert, your coin dealer could inform you when specific or rare coins become available to buy, or from where you might find out more about your individual interest.

For many coin enthusiasts, amassing a stack of coins is easy, but sourcing and enhancing your collection with rarities and coins of genuine interest can take a lifetime. With limited release anniversary and remembrance coins printed annually, you could collect coins for all of your days, passing on a collection worthy of a family heirloom.
