The CompTIA A+ course covers four specialised areas - you need to pass exams in 2 specialities to reach the level of competent in A+. You'll find that many training establishments restrict their A+ to just two of the training options. We think this is selling you short - of course you can gain accreditation, but knowledge of every section will prepare you more fully for when you're in your working life, where you'll need a more comprehensive understanding.
That's why we believe you need education in all 4 specialities.

Qualifying in CompTIA A+ without additional courses will give you the ability to mend and maintain laptops, Macs and PC's; principally ones that aren't joined to a network - this generally applies to home use and small companies. Were you to add Network+ to your CompTIA A+ training course, you will additionally be able to take care of networks, which means you'll be able to move further up the career path.

Some commercial training providers only provide office hours or extended office hours support; It's rare to find someone who offers late evening or full weekend cover. Email support is too slow, and phone support is often to a call-centre which will chat nicely with you for 5 minutes to ask what the issue is and then simply send an email to an instructor - who will attempt to call you within 24-48 hrs, at a suitable time to them. This is no use if you're stuck with a particular problem and only have a specific time yok of).

Kick out a salesman that just tells you what course you should do without a decent chat to gain understanding of your current abilities as well as experience level. Make sure they can draw from a wide-enough range of products so they can provide you with what's right for you. With some real-world experience or qualifications, it may be that your starting point of study is different from a beginner. Commencing with a basic PC skills module first may be the ideal way to commence your IT programme, depending on your skill level at the moment.

Remember: the course itself or the accreditation is not the ultimate goal; the job or career that you want is. Too many training companies put too much weight in the certificate itself. Don't let yourself become one of those unfortunate people that choose a course that on the surface appears interesting - and end up with a plaque on the wall for a job they hate.

You need to keep your eye on where you want to go, and build your study action-plan from that - not the other way round. Keep your eyes on your goals and study for a job you'll enjoy for years to come. Take advice from a professional advisor, even if there's a fee involved - it's much safer and cheaper to find out at the beginning whether a chosen track will suit, instead of discovering following two years of study that you've picked the wrong track and have to start from the beginning again.

Without a doubt: There's absolutely no individual job security available anymore; there's only industry or business security - a company will let anyone go when it fits their trade requirements. Where there are escalating skills shortfalls coupled with rising demand though, we generally find a new kind of market-security; driven by the conditions of constant growth, employers are struggling to hire the staff required.

Looking at the Information Technology (IT) business, the 2006 e-Skills survey demonstrated a 26 percent deficit in trained staff. That means for every four jobs existing across IT, there are only 3 trained people to do them. Attaining the appropriate commercial computing exams is thus a quick route to succeed in a long-lasting and satisfying profession. Because the IT sector is developing at such a quick pace, could there honestly be a better market worth taking into account as a retraining vehicle.
